Where are my backups?

Just one month ago, the small town and school district of West, Texas suffered a horrendous tragedy, with the massive explosion that devastated much of the small town and the West Independent School District. My understanding is that the explosion devastated much of this district’s technology infrastructure, servers, and backups.  And just now it is being reported that a lot of schools (and most likely their data) reside close to fertilizer storage across the country.  And unfortunately this week in Oklahoma City, five schools were ravaged by a horrendous tornado.

Data is unfortunately super easy to lose – if not to a major natural or other disaster, then just as easily to a failed hard drive, a broken water main, or a building fire.  Whether you are a technology director, superintendent, or a classroom teacher, this is the perfect time to ask several questions, where are my files and systems backed up?   Are the backups stored in different physical locations?  Are the backups in a secured location?   Can the backups be restored to a different place if needed?

All of us need to be backing up our important digital assets (and our students’ assets.)   Very few of our schools sit somewhere immune to natural disasters.   San Antonio is thought to be a very good location in Texas much more immune to tornadoes and hurricanes than many parts of the state, such that we have many very large data centers here.  Yet the picture to the right is my son’s elementary school two years ago, with a major wildfire burning right behind it.  I am sure the staff of the school never thought a fire would threaten them, yet it came so very close.

So before travelling down to San Antonio to ISTE, please take a few minutes and backup your laptop, iPad, servers, etc. to another site or perhaps to the cloud, lest some unfortunate disaster strikes you or your school.  Safe travels.

Non Tech Alert: Spending Some Precious Moments with the Scion FR-S

Well this is another blog entry straying from the tech realm, but since I got to spend some time today with an incredible piece of driving technology today, I think this will have to qualify as a tech post.

The object of my driving desire
I don't hide my love for fun driving cars.  But this has always been tempered by budget, practicality, and life.  My current Mazda 6 fit this mold - super fun to drive, low cost, decent gas mileage, and it has room for the little buggers in my life.

Well today, I think my car philosophy might have changed when I had a chance to drive a couple of beautiful new Scion FR-S on a test track at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. Here is a car that by any sports car measure is a fantastic value, drives like virtually nothing else in its class and looks oh so good to boot.

Now in my affordability book, a car just shy of $25,000 may not being the ultimate economy car, but for a car that can snake through tight corners with the greatest of ease, and DOES drive like a top of the line sports car, this is a STEAL.

Today Scion and Yokohama setup a first drive track with some great corners that really let the FR-S shine. I must give a special thanks to Yokohama for putting their S Drive tires on the FR-S. We had these things squealing through the turns, yet they held like glue to the pavement.  I have not driven the FR-S on the stock "what were they thinking European Prius tires", but I am convinced from others that those should be ripped off by any self respecting car enthusiast.

Enthusiast drivers were clearly the main audience out for this event today - there were some beautiful Mazda 3, 6, and RX8 in the lot, so I could tell that there were a lot of people who were very curious about all the great press the FR-S has received.  I imagine, much like me, there are many folks who are becoming Scion fans after this event.

Well my next chore is to get one from my local dealer to test drive (which could be a next to impossible feat, as they seem to have almost no Scions at their Scion dealership.)  My goal in this is to see if one of these can actually make it onto my steep driveway........ I sure hope it does, as I am sold!

San Antonio Area Technology Directors Meet to Discuss Technology and Budgets

San Antonio Area Technology Directors from the education industry met today at South San Antonio ISD. This is group meets quarterly to discuss issues and trends, as well as to share ideas. The most sobering talk today was around the Texas House draft budget and the elimination of the state Technology Allotment, which has been a cornerstone of school district technology budgets all over the state of Texas. Technology has become a vital part of all district operations, while most districts have let the state of Texas fund a large share of their costs. Now this money is looking like it may no longer be available in the upcoming biennium; many folks fear that this means schools will end up having computers with lifecycles of 10 years or more, and many in the group feel that they or their staff may end up without a job. The hope is that a compromise budget may be less drastic, although everyone realizes that cuts will happen across the state....
